Gastric Bypass & Weight Loss Surgery
The Gastrointestinal (GI) and Hepato-Pancreato-Biliary (HPB) Surgery Service was started in 1999 in our Hospital & Research Centre with the establishment of a unit comprising consultants with special interests and expertise in HPB and GI surgery. In 2006, this unit became a separate department and was recognised for the Diplomate of National Board (DNB) Surgical Gastroenterology Programme of the National Board of Examinations (NBE).Â
The department has now evolved into a well-known centre for treating patients with complex diseases of the digestive system, liver, pancreas, and biliary tract.Â
The Department of Gastrointestinal (GI) and Hepato-Pancreato-Biliary (HPB) Surgery has consultants who have specialised in hepatobiliary surgery, liver transplantation, laparoscopic surgery, upper GI surgery, bariatric surgery and colorectal surgery. This surgical work is backed by expertise in gastroenterology, interventional radiology and endoscopy. HPB and GI surgeons perform complex hepatobiliary procedures, which include resections of the liver for tumours, surgery for obstructive jaundice, procedures for portal hypertension and surgical intervention for pancreatitis. With support from hepatology, endoscopy and interventional radiology services, a combined team approach is offered for the management of liver tumours.Â
t the heart of the department’s approach is a commitment to patient-centred care. The Department of Gastrointestinal (GI) and Hepato-Pancreato-Biliary (HPB) Surgery strongly believes in treating each patient with compassion, respect, and empathy and ensuring that they are fully informed and involved in all aspects of their care. The team is effortlessly dedicated to providing personalised care that is focused on achieving the best possible outcomes for the patients.
The Department of Gastrointestinal (GI) and Hepato-Pancreato-Biliary (HPB) Surgery is not only one of the oldest centres for HPB surgery in Western India but also an academic and training department.Â
The department is recognised for the Diplomate of National Board (DNB) Surgical Gastroenterology Programme. It offers a one-year GI Surgery Fellowship Programme wherein a candidate who has finished a basic degree in general surgery is trained in surgical gastroenterology.Â
The department also regularly presents cases at national and international conferences and conducts annual conferences in which both national and international faculties participate.
